If you're considering installing a garbage disposal in your home, you may be wondering which size and type of motor is best for you. Here are some of the benefits of different garbage disposal motor sizes and options:

  • 1/3 horsepower: This size is suitable for small households with minimal food waste, or if you generally scrape scraps into the garbage. It's a good choice if you don't generate a lot of waste you put down the drain and only need a disposal for small amounts of food waste.

  • 1/2 horsepower: This size is suitable for medium-sized households with moderate food waste. It's a good choice if you generate a moderate amount of garbage and need a disposal for everyday items as well as some tougher items, such as bones.

  • 3/4 horsepower: This size is suitable for larger households with high food waste. It's a good choice if you generate a lot of garbage and need a disposal that can handle tough items.

  • Continuous feed: This type of garbage disposal allows you to add food waste to the disposal as it's running. This can be convenient if you generate a lot of food waste, as you don't have to wait for the disposal to finish running before adding more.

  • Batch feed: This type of garbage disposal requires you to load all of the food waste into the disposal at once and then activate it by pressing a button or inserting a special stopper. This can be safer, as you don't have to worry about reaching into the disposal while it's running.

If you have a garbage disposal, you may have experienced some common issues from time to time. While some issues may require professional repair, there are many that can be easily fixed on your own. Here are some common garbage disposal problems and how to fix them:

  • Clogged disposal: If your disposal is clogged, it may not be working properly. To fix this issue, you can try using a plunger or a garbage disposal cleaning tool to remove the blockage. There should be a hex head wrench by your disposal, this will fit into a slot at the bottom of your disposal allowing you to manually turn the disposal blades. The vast majority of the time this will clear your problem. If the clog is too severe, please feel free to give us a call and we will be happy to do what is needed to get it operational.

  • Strange noises: If your disposal is making strange noises, it may be due to a foreign object stuck in the blades. To fix this issue, you can turn off the disposal and use a flashlight to locate the object. Once you've found it, you can remove it and turn the disposal back on.

  • Leaks: If your disposal is leaking, it could be due to a loose connection or a damaged seal. To fix this issue, you can try tightening any loose connections and replacing the seal if it's damaged. If the leak persists, your disposal may have rotted out and likely needs to be replaced. Please give us a call to get it fixed right away.

  • Odors: If your disposal is emitting a bad odor, it may be due to food waste that has been left behind. To fix this issue, you can try using a garbage disposal cleaning solution or running ice and lemon peel through the disposal to freshen it up.

If you're having trouble fixing your garbage disposal on your own, our team is here to help. We have the skills and expertise to diagnose and fix any issues you may be experiencing.
